Andrew Field is one of the many international alumni who have been part of the One Village at a Time (OVAT) journey, contributing to community-led development while gaining meaningful, hands-on experience.
Andrew joined OVAT as an intern with a strong interest in community development and sustainable livelihoods. During his time with the organisation, he worked closely with local communities, OVAT staff, and volunteers to support initiatives aimed at improving household resilience and community well-being.
Reflecting on his experience, Andrew describes OVAT as more than an internship placement—it was an opportunity to learn directly from communities.
“Working with One Village at a Time challenged how I understood development. It wasn’t about coming in with answers, but about listening, learning, and working alongside people to strengthen what already exists in the community.”
Through field engagement, Andrew gained practical exposure to grassroots development approaches, cross-cultural collaboration, and the realities of rural life. He also developed skills in teamwork, communication, and participatory problem-solving—skills that continue to shape his professional and personal journey.
Today, Andrew remains connected to OVAT as part of its growing alumni network, carrying forward the values of community ownership, sustainability, and service. His experience reflects the broader impact of OVAT’s internship and volunteer programmes—not only on communities, but on the individuals who walk alongside them.
Andrew’s story is a reminder that development is a shared journey—learning, serving, and growing together, one village at a time.
